Located on the Coast of Rural North Otago, Oamaru is recognized for its outstanding Limestone buildings, Coastal walks, Blue Penguin Colony, as well as its architecture.
The Oamaru region offers a fantastic range of attractions, which include Landon Creek Bird Sanctuary and Garden Walk, North Otago Museum, Blue Penguin Colony, The Forrester Gallery, Totara Estate Centennial Park, Oamaru Public Gardens, Numerous Golf Clubs and Whitestone Walking Tours. Snow Skiing in the winter season is within easy reach of Oamaru. Also worth a visit are The Art Gallery, Museum, Historical Precinct and the outstanding Catholic Cathedral. Oamaru, a pleasant town not far south of the Waitaki River, developed a port in the shelter of Cape Wybrow. Many people go from there up the Waitaki V alley to visit the Benmore, Waitaki and Aviemore power stations and their surrounding lakes where jet boating, sailing and water skiing are all accessible recreations. In close proximity is fishing in the Waitaki River. Oamaru is often known as the Whitestone City as many of the towns buildings were built out of Whitestone. A big attraction for visitors to Oamaru is the coastal wildlife including the yellow-eyed penguin, the little blue penguin and fur seals. The Oamaru Blue Penguin Colony is mainly a conservation area for blue penguins, the smallest penguin in the world. Totara Estate Memorial is not far south of Oamaru where the buildings of the first freezing works in New Zealand have been preserved. The export of frozen meat brought considerable prosperity to Otago long regarded as a good area for sheep farming. Oamaru is the core for traveling in the North Otago area. |
